Growing Food, Building Community, Regenerating Land
From Greenhouse to Homestead: A Journey into Permaculture
Hi, I'm Bailey, and I'm passionate about helping people reconnect with growing their own food.
My journey into food growing started with a year working at a greenhouse, where I fell in love with the physical outdoor work and the peaceful nature of tending plants. That experience showed me how much I thrive when I'm moving my body, working with my hands, and spending time in the sun. But it also revealed something important: I wanted to help people grow food in ways that work with nature, not against it.
That's what led me to permaculture.
Why Permaculture?
Permaculture design creates food-producing landscapes that are:
More productive with less effort over time
Resilient to climate challenges and pests
Beautiful, diverse, and alive with beneficial insects and wildlife
Built on regenerative principles that improve soil health year after year
I'm currently completing my Permaculture Design Certificate and Organic Master Gardener certification (graduating early 2026) because I want to bring the highest level of knowledge and credibility to every design I create. While I'm early in my professional journey, my designs are backed by rigorous permaculture training and a genuine love for this work.
My Vision for Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island has a unique opportunity to increase local food security while creating beautiful, productive landscapes. I believe every property - whether it's a small urban yard or a multi-acre homestead - can contribute to a more resilient, food-abundant community.
When you work with Harvest & Grow Designs, you're not just getting a landscaping plan. You're getting a partner who genuinely cares about your success and the health of your land.
I'd love to help you grow your own food abundance. Explore how we can work together to create a permaculture design perfectly suited to your land and lifestyle
Our Philosophy
Design Principles We Live By
-
Work With Nature, Not Against It
Every property has natural patterns - water flow, sun exposure, wind, existing vegetation. We design with these forces, not against them, creating systems that thrive with minimal intervention.
-
Start Small, Think Big
Your design is phased over multiple years so you're never overwhelmed. Start with the highest-impact elements and build from there as your system matures.
-
Every Element Serves Multiple Functions
A fruit tree provides food, shade, wildlife habitat, and beauty. A pond stores water, supports beneficial insects, and creates a microclimate. Good design makes every element work hard.
-
Value the Marginal
The edges between ecosystems (forest and meadow, land and water) are the most productive zones. We maximize these edge spaces in every design.
-
Produce No Waste
Everything is a resource. "Waste" from one system becomes food for another - leaves become mulch, kitchen scraps become compost, greywater feeds fruit trees.
-
The Problem is the Solution
Too much shade? Grow shade-loving crops. Soggy low spot? Create a rain garden. Every challenge is an opportunity to design something productive.
